Study Finds, Sleep Difficulty Is An Indication Of Type-2 Diabetes

Whether it is work pressure or stress, you often find yourself awake at night. While this may seem normal, it may be an indication of the onset of diabetes. A team of researchers from the University of South Australia finds that trouble in sleeping could be linked to type-2 diabetes risk.

Considering that millions of people are getting diabetes every year, it is important to understand all the possible risk factors and warning signs. Researchers found that prolonged sleep issues are indicators of poor metabolic and cardiac health. It can impact cholesterol, body mass index and inflammatory markers, all of which are risk factors for type-2 diabetes.

Difficulty sleeping has different aspects. Not being able to fall asleep, waking up in the middle of the sleep or not being able to get a restful sleep, are all different and affect health differently. If you sleep for eight hours but wake up 4-5 times in between, it also falls under disturbed sleep category.

Sleep Difficulty Is An Indication Of Type-2 Diabetes

Sleep hygiene is all about sleep habits, sound sleep and duration of sleep. The researchers analyzed different aspects of sleep and how it can pose a risk for type-2 diabetes. They found a strong connection between sleep troubles and type-2 diabetes risk. They took data of 1,000 people with an average age of 45 years. They noted their duration, sleep timings, and problems they experienced while sleeping.

It was found that people who experienced trouble sleeping had high cholesterol, body mass index and inflammation. These markers are risk factors for diabetes and a lot of people may develop type-2 diabetes later in their life.

Sleep is extremely important for our overall health. If we don’t get enough sound sleep, it can hamper a lot of vital functions including cardiac health, lung health and cognitive functions. You are highly likely to experience mood disorders, loss of concentration, poor focus, high blood pressure and breathing issues. Thus, it is important to consider sleep as a whole and not just the duration of sleep. One should follow good sleep hygiene to ward off the risks and lead a healthy life.
