Importance Of Taking A Break From Screen To Avoid Digital Eye Strain

Vision is the most important sense organ as our eyesight drives our perception. However, very few people are aware that the eyes are among the first sense organs to become ill and damaged due to long screen time whether it is mobile, computer or TV. Most of us are catching up with digital life, but life will not wait for you to develop new-age or 21st-century digital screen syndrome such as Digital Eye Strain.

In an exclusive interaction with OnlyMyHealth editorial team, Mohita Gupta, Chief Business Officer, Deccan Healthcare Limited shares the importance of taking a break from the screen and reducing screen time in order to avoid digital eye strain which can lead to several eye-related health problems. Here is what she shared with us.

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain is a condition where your eyes feel tired due to excessive screen time. This can be quite disconcerting. Sometimes it leads to redness and watery eyes. However, taking out some time away from the screen can help us recover from this. But although initially, it may seem harmless, this can lead to serious eye issues which can even lead to partial, temporary, or even permanent loss of vision.

Causes of Digital Eye Strain

We generally blink 15-20 times in a minute which activates the tear glands and keeps our eyes moist and healthy. Research says, that while we are on screen for reading, playing, or working, we blink less often which leads to irritation or dryness of the eyes. Also, the flickering text, the screen glare, and the contrast of the text against the screen color can cause screen eyes. Typically, it is one of the syndromes which are caused or exacerbated by High Screen Time – time spent on digital screens and is considered to even be an occupational hazard in the IT industry.

Prevention of Digital Eye Strain

Keeping off the screen is the best way to relax your eyes, but in today’s digital world it is not possible to keep completely off the digital screen. To prevent digital eye strain, make sure your computer screen is at least an arm’s length distance from your face and the center of the screen must be kept 10-15 degrees below the level of your eyes, replace your screen with a matte screen or add a screen cover to cut down the glare, try the 20-20-20 rule, where every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look at something that is 20 feet away from you. This exercise will help in resetting the focus and further helping the eyes feel less fatigued. In addition, make sure your room is bright enough that your screen is not the only source of light that strains your eyes.

Treatment for Digital Eye Strain

The treatment for screen eyes is easy. It is advisable to try natural products which are low on chemicals. Try and invest in eye shields, especially the ones that are made with vitamins, antioxidants like Lutein and Zeaxanthin and essential fatty acids that keep your eyes healthy and functional. It is thought that lack of antioxidants can make the eyes stressed and dry so the antioxidants restricts the free radicals and keeps the eyes healthy and gives you freshness of vision.
