1. Teeth Grinding
You may be clenching or grinding your teeth in your sleep without even realizing it. Thus, when you wake up in the morning, you have a painful jaw.
2. Tooth Cavities
The outer layers of a tooth are often where dental cavities begin to form. This happens due to the activity of bad bacteria in your mouth. If left unattended, the cavities start forming into the inner layers of your tooth and reach the root, affecting the surrounding tissues and bones. The effects of cavities can lead to a painful jaw in the morning.
3. Gum Disease
Your jaw may have pain due to gum disease, also known as gingivitis (the swelling of gums) which may further involve bone leading to periodontitis. In this condition, your gums experience inflammation due to the accumulation of bacteria and plaque buildup. If this is not treated, it can make its way down to the bone and affect other tissues as well, causing significant jaw pain.

4. Sleeping Position
The way you sleep can also affect your jaw. Any pressure while you sleep can displace your jaw out of its natural position. This happens when you sleep on your stomach or on the side where your jaw experiences constant pressure till the time you are sleeping. Thus, when you wake up, you have a sore aching jaw.
5. Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are also known to cause jaw pain. This set of teeth often does not have enough room to erupt properly. This results in putting unwarranted pressure on neighboring teeth and as a result, these teeth become misaligned, causing pain. Additionally, the wisdom teeth frequently become impacted, or stuck in your jaw and are unable to fully erupt through the gums, which can result in jaw pain.
6. Inflammation of the sinuses
Near your jawbone and the roots of your upper teeth are several sinuses. These sinuses get filled with fluid, resulting in congestion. This pressurises your teeth as well as your jaw. Additionally, when there is inflammation in your sinuses, your jaw experiences pain.
7. TMJ Disorder
Your two temporomandibular joints, which attach your lower jaw to your skull, might be affected by temporomandibular disorders. This joint disorder may also restrict the movement of your jaw, causing difficulty in opening and closing of the mouth and clicking or popping sounds on movement. It might also lead to deviation of the lower jaw.
